I am Nicky Visser, founder of Back to Basics Dog Training based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire since 2009. If you are looking for Fun, Game+ Reward -based Puppy & Dog Training, you have come to the right place.
I pride myself in giving puppies and dogs the opportunity to make the right decisions by setting them up for success. My love and experience with animals has taken me from Holland to the UK and as far as the beautiful Greek island, Santorini.
I worked with the local vet and the Santorini Animal Welfare Association (SAWA) for years. I rescued, socialised and trained wild, street and domestic dogs. No textbook or course can give you this kind of hands-on experience and I thoroughly loved my time there!

We recently completed the 'Teenage Tearaways' course with our puppy Bertie and we highly recommend both Nicky and Clare. Bertie (and we) had a great time - we learnt so much and had fun in the process. The location was great - open, yet really safe for puppies! The WhatsApp group was really helpful to remind us of our practise 'homework' and even to share 'how to' style videos as reminders. Nicky showed genuine care and interest in Bertie and the whole experience was positive. We would highly recommend Nicky and would definitely do training with her in future.

Nicky has been a great help in training our very bouncy golden doodle. We’ve done both puppy classes and 1:1 sessions with Nicky and not only were they good fun, but full of pragmatic advice and tips. In particular, the 1:1s have really helped us troubleshoot some overexcitable behaviour! Our dog loves Nicky and is so excited every time we see her. This is the second time we used Nikkie’s expertise. Nikkie has been extremely helpful with behaviour advice first our puppy in 2017 and recently with our 9 month old rescue dog. She is very knowledgeable and professional but also friendly and happy to answer all our queries. Would highly recommend her one-on-one sessions as well as her group training classes. ( Without her help we would probably have sent the dog back!)

We recently completed the puppy training sessions and also a course of 1-1 sessions. Nicky has a wealth of knowledge and expertise and really reassured us in those early days. Her and Clare taught us great exercises to do with our pup which were great to do at home, too. Nicky is always on hand to answer your questions and offer advice and is extremely passionate about what she does.

If you are looking for a trainer who is passionate about the work they do, an expert in their field, full of really helpful advise and always available to answer any questions, then Nicky is the one for you. Nicky has been training my 9 month old Boxer since he was 9 weeks old on a one to one basis and what he has learnt, and retained, has been amazing to see. He absolutely adores her and the mere mention of her name makes him become alert and look for her, he is her number 1 fan ! We willingly travel well over an hour each way to see her even though there are numerous trainers around where we live, why ? because I wanted the best !

Let me start off my saying that when you first look at the costs, you will think Nicky is expensive but let me tell you, boy is she is 100% worth it. You are not only paying for the colossal amount of expertise and experience she has but she genuinely cares which is something money can’t buy.
I have a 2 year old chocolate lab who previous to meeting Nicky I have taken to weekly dog training sessions and done everything by the book. Yet, I still had some learned behavioural issues which impacted the bond between us and although I I loved the furboy, there were times I wished he wasn’t such an idiot!!
And that’s where Nicky comes in- she was able to really understand the triggers and why he behaved the way he did- most of which I had unintentionally caused.
Nicky has helped me to really bond with him and worked with us closely to recommend the right level of training and encouragement specific to us. Nicky is non judgemental and understands but will always be honest and put you on the right path. I’m not saying my furboy is now suddenly perfect but is perfect to me and this wouldn’t be the case without Nicky.

We signed up for the puppy training classes and we were not disappointed. Nicky and Clare have a wealth of knowledge and tips and the training was fantastic too.
